Sometimes you just have to laugh.

Dear Blake,

Let me tell you a story about what happened yesterday.

I fed you dinner and like always, you needed to be hosed down afterward.  I brought you upstairs and gave you a bath.  After your bath I brought you in your room and put you in your crib.  I went to go grab a diaper and before I could turn around, you were standing up in your crib facing out and peeing all over the crib and the carpet!  I said “Ohhh!” in surprise and started laughing.  As you looked at me you started laughing back.  Sometimes you just have to laugh…

After I cleaned up the carpet and took off the bumper pads and sheets to wash them, I finally got you ready for bed and was just about to start putting you to bed when the lights flickered and then went out.  You looked at me like you were scared and looked up at the light like what happened?!  I told you it was ok and then I heard the wind.  It sounded like nothing I had ever heard of before.  It was so strong and I thought for sure it was a tornado.  I brought you downstairs because I knew that was the safest spot in our house.  The power was out and there were no lights so I brought you in the bathroom and we just sat…

You looked at me as if to say, “Mama, why are we in the bathroom?”  I just kept telling you it was ok, as the wind howled and things blew all around outside.

It was one crazy night and everything happened so fast.  When I finally got you to bed and got to sit down I was so tired and exhausted and I thought about everything that just happened in the last hour.  Sometimes you just have to laugh…

Love,

Mama

  1. First of all, your structure is awesome. I love the letters to your son. Moments to hang on to, making meaning along the way.
I laughed out loud reading your recap of your little man. It brought a couple of memories of my sons. I like that about sharing stories. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

  2. Erin, I don’t have kids, but I am pretty much the sole caretaker for my mom who lives down the hall from me in my condo building. I now know what it feels like to have someone completely dependent on you. I used to enjoy storms – now I worry about how I would get my mom down to the ground level. So, what I’m trying to say is that.I can kind of relate to your slice tonight!
