Sleeping like a baby is a lie

Dear Blake,

When the nurse knocked on our door, we were able to spend the night with you for the first time.  But boy let me tell you, we didn’t sleep a wink!  When you have kids of your own one day you will truly understand when people say you won’t sleep.  That first night I don’t think we slept one minute because we were excited, and scared, and nervous, and learning, and not understanding what it was like to have a newborn, and just a mix of emotions all rolled into one.  It’s like the nurses hand you your child and you should just know what to do, but we didn’t.  But let me tell you, we learned very quickly.  You made tons of noises and everytime you did, we were up!  We were at your side!  We learned what each noise was and we learned how to change a diaper and we learned how to rock you back to sleep…all in one night.  I’ve never learned so much in one day before!

Love,

Mom

  1. This is beautiful. I love the mix of emotions you share in the post. From a writing stand point, I love the way you vary sentence lengths to convey those whirling emotions.

  2. Erin, I like your use of writers craft in this piece. ….We were excited, and nervous, and learning and not understanding what it was like to have a newborn, and just a mix of emotions all rolled into one! I loved that sentence. It really conveyed the excitement AND the anxiety that new parents feel!
